About Dr. David Funk
Hello everyone,
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. I grew up in a small town in Northwestern Pennsylvania before attending Penn State - Main Campus, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. Initially, I was pursuing a career in dentistry and continued my education at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, obtaining a certificate in Health Sciences. However, my focus changed dramatically when I spent a day shadowing my sister, a physical therapist, at her clinic. Observing her treat a patient who suffered a stroke and simply wanted to hold her grandchildren again was a pivotal moment for me. It was then that I realized the transformative power of physical therapy and rehabilitation medicine.
My journey led me to A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona, where I earned my Doctorate in Physical Therapy and met my wife. After graduation, we moved to Hawaii, then Denver, and eventually settled in Michigan. Throughout these moves, I gained a diverse background in physical therapy, working in outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities, and acute care hospitals. These experiences allowed me to see both the positive and negative aspects of the field, including the troubling shift from patient-focused care to payor-focused care.
I didn’t enter the field of physical therapy to be constrained by large companies dictating who I can treat and for how long. My passion lies in helping patients, and I believe the focus should remain on them. My treatment philosophy is rooted in osteopathic principles, emphasizing a holistic approach where I treat the patient, not just the problem. At On Pointe Wellness and Recovery, I strive to provide personalized care, ensuring a 1:1 experience where I can truly get to know my patients. I believe that understanding the person is crucial to addressing the problem effectively. When you come to my clinic, you can expect to be the focal point of the treatment. I value hearing your stories, celebrating your achievements, and navigating through challenges together. I ask for your trust and honesty, and I promise to reciprocate.
Outside of my professional life, my world revolves around my family. I cherish time spent with my wife, son, three dogs, and two cats. As a lifelong Penn State fan (comments are welcome in the clinic!), I enjoy traveling, being outdoors, and exploring new places. Currently, I am discovering all that Michigan has to offer and immersing myself in the vibrant community of Metro Detroit.
Thank you for letting me share my story with you. I look forward to the opportunity to help you on your journey to wellness and recovery.
